Egor is fantastic... a natural talent. I have watched him for a while he was training under Vaganova's rector Nikolai Tsiskaridze in his class of 5 boys and at the exam  and I noticed his natural grace and poise, I thought he really stood out. With A HIDDEN LIFE, Malick continues in a similar vein, but, with a renewed emphasis on narrative to tie the imagery together. The movie is based on the true story of an Austrian farmer Franz Jägerstätter (August Diehl) who refused to pledge allegiance to Hitler and Germany during WWII. Franz had been a soldier for Austria, even so, he refused to avow loyalty to the Nazi regime. Franz's wife Fani (Valerie Pachner) and two young children bear the brunt of the village's citizens who have chosen to go along to get along. Franz is given several opportunities to avoid the consequences of refusing to fight by giving an even half-hearted oath to Hitler, but, he stands on principle above all else.
But, pure plot isn't what Malick is after. There is, maybe, about an hour's worth of dialogue over the movie's three hour length. Along with Cinematographer Jorg Widmer and Composer James Newman Howard (augmented with many classical pieces) Malick is striving for something much deeper. Widmer's use of wide lenses allows for the camera to be both intimate as well as giving the viewer a view of the mountainous landscape of the Austrian countryside. Using digital photography exclusively for the first time, Malick was able to have the camera run for long periods in order to allow Diehl and the cast to improvise and inhabit their roles and surroundings.
Malick's aesthetic is certainly not for the masses, but, here it works gorgeously. The cumulative effect is a sense of lives that were actually lived - not just scripted. There is a spiritual feel to the movie that goes beyond the mere religious* into something more profound.
Malick's work has been compared to that of the great Russian Director Andrei Tarkovsky. They are two of the finest Cinema Poets. A HIDDEN LIFE is a superb testament to Malick's art.

But the work hes made over the last few years hasnt been searching so much as lost. 2011s “The Tree of Life” found the auteur pivoting away from the past for the first time in his storied career, and that semi-autobiographical masterpiece came to serve as the auteurs bridge from historical frescos to contemporary sketches – from profound awe to puzzled wonder. If “Badlands” and “Days of Heaven” once proved that Malicks impressionistic film language has the power to make myth feel like memory, the exasperating likes of “Knight of Cups” and “Song to Song” suggested that it also lacks the vocabulary to make sense of the 21st century. Unable to find any real measure of grace in a world that seems to have left it behind, Malick resigned himself to manufacturing his own artificial variety. His uncertainty faltered into doubt — if not in his Christian God, than in himself. And thats how we got Ben Affleck watching Olga Kurylenko spinning herself stupid in front of a Sonic Burger. But now, after seven long years of wandering in the desert — at a time when evil has become so rampant that even atheists might tremble at the godlessness thats blowing over the world like a dull breeze — Terrence Malick has finally rediscovered his conviction and returned to solid ground. And he hasnt come back empty-handed. Shot on digital (and taking full advantage of the catch-as-catch-can opportunities the format allows) but told with the probing moral urgency that was suffused into “The Thin Red Line, ” “ A Hidden Life ” is a lucid and profoundly defiant portrait of faith in crisis. Its an intimate epic about the immense strength required for resistance, and the courage that it takes for one to hold fast to their virtue during a crisis of faith, and in a world that may never reward them for it. It is, without question, the best thing that Malick has made since “The Tree of Life. ” Providing a soulful and occasionally sublime middle ground between Malicks two eras, “A Hidden Life” is only a few seconds old before it announces itself as a kind of return to form. An opening title card boasts that “The following story is inspired by real events, ” and just like that, Malick makes his audience a promise that he intends to keep: This movie will have a story. The virtue of a coherent plot may be a bit overstated these days, particularly in an indie community that likes to stress how “everyone has a story to tell, ” but Malick is in dire need of the bumper lanes that a linear narrative provides. “A Hidden Life” Reiner Bajo And “A Hidden Life” provides a linear narrative, albeit one thats interrupted like a jammed radio signal, and characteristically assembled from the bits that other period epics might cut. The film begins in the idyllic valleys of Austrias St. Radegund, a postcard-perfect village thats located above the clouds and the storm thats brewing in the world below. The year is 1939, but that information doesnt seem to be especially relevant for Franz Jägerstätter (August Dielh) and his wife Fani (Valerie Pachner) a farming couple whose simple life is limited to their crops, their daughters, and the tight-knit community who gathers in the local pub each Saturday night and the local church each Sunday morning. and eventually their three daughters. We see the representative images of Malicks ideal life, complete with all the usual running and playing and frolicking in the fields. Imagine the childhood sequences from “The Tree of Life” transposed into pre-war Europe, and youll have a decent idea of how the first hour of Malicks new film unfold. One striking difference here is the absence of Malicks regular cinematographer/enabler, Emmanuel Lubezki, whos been replaced here by Joerg Widmer. Widmer, who worked as a camera operator on five of Malicks previous films, steps into the role without rocking the boat — if anything, he steadies it. The natural lighting brings a rustic hue to everything it touches, while the lush camerawork is often as restless and anecdotal as it was in “The Tree of Life, ” running towards the actors like an eager child and looking up at the adults with a sense of worship. Here, however, Malick slows his unmoored style to emphasize serenity, and punctuates the film with an array of static shots that are almost Herzogian in how they capture the indifference of the green mountains and the gentle mist that floats between them. Its all so beautiful that Franz — quiet, stoic, more of a vessel than a man, and generally emblematic of how the simplicity of these farmer characters suits Malicks emotional detachment — has to alert us to a disturbance in the force. It drifts up the hill like a pestilence that only he can see. News travels about Hitlers advancements, as does the fact that every able-bodied Austrian man will be forced to sign an oath pledging their allegiance to the fuhrer. Franz, whose father died on the losing and less dignified side of World War I, doesnt respond well to that idea. “Oh my wife, ” Franz says via the voiceover track that predictably comprises most of the dialogue in this movie, “what has become of our country? ” Thats only managed to become a more familiar refrain in the years that Malick spent tinkering with this footage in the editing room. “A Hidden LIfe” Franz is a religious man, but not necessarily any more religious than the rest of the people in his mountain hamlet. Nevertheless, none of the other Christians seem troubled by the idea of swearing fealty to the antichrist (maybe documentary would be Malicks ideal mode. The argument is that it wouldnt do any good for a few quiet farmers to defy the Third Reich — theyd simply be sent to the camps, leaving their families to starve. Much to the hostile chagrin of his friends and neighbors, Franz disagrees. “God wont send us more than we can bear, ” they insist, as they devolve into good Nazis. Of course, theyre unwilling to find out how much that might be. Franz has a far more proactive understanding of the free will that his God has given him. His understanding of divinity isnt driven by results. Franz isnt eager to martyr himself; hes not the Joan of Arc type, as much as Carl Theodor Dreyers influence can be felt throughout the final 90 minutes of this lightning-fast three-hour film, nor does he wish to position himself as the protagonist of Malicks version of “Silence, ” which rebukes all versions of that story by insisting that apostasy in the name of survival can never be as Christ-like as dying on the cross. “A Hidden Life” is never spiteful towards Fani, or many of the other characters who plead with Franz to sign the oath once hes taken to a Berlin prison and branded as a traitor, but there is little ambiguity to the George Eliot quote that closes the film, and lends it its title: “For the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs. ” “A Hidden Life” is essentially a pearl string necklace of unhistoric acts, as the banality of the moments that dominate Malicks attention help to reinforce the pointless of Franzs potential martyrdom. He isnt dying for a cause, or leaving behind an empire — hes dying for his principles, and leaving behind a loving family and a few pigs. His is a moral narrative, not an emotional one, and Malick characteristically omits the major decisions that lead Franz to his fate, choosing instead to focus on the soul-searching that guides his decisions, and the anguish that they cause. The reward for Franzs nobility is as ambiguous on Earth as it is in heaven, but that is precisely why doing the right thing requires a measure of faith. Despite its repetitive and foraging nature, “A Hidden Life” flies by, as the film is helped along by gorgeous scenery, a beautiful score, and a handful of supporting performances from actors like Matthias Schoenaerts and “Transit” star Franz Rogowski (who earns the distinction of appearing in more than one scene. The late Bruno Ganz and Michael Nyqvist respectively make their final appearances as a Nazi judge and an anguished, sympathizing member of the Church. The relentless pace, and the distance that Malick keeps from his characters, only feels problematic after the film is over and youve been released from its grip. The moral velocity of “A Hidden Life” requires viewers to believe that Franz is doing the right thing, but the film only earns our sympathy and support by suppressing emotion, and limiting its access to how Fani and her children feel about the events that unfold. At times, that tactic feels like a cheap way for Malick to shore up his eclesiastical argument, as the film itself is never as conflicted as Franz appears to be in its first movements. Then again, faith isnt a fight to be won, but rather an ongoing conversation, and one that Malick is contributing to more productively than ever before (it was just recently that Malick wrote “Silence” filmmaker Martin Scorsese a letter that asked “What does Christ want from us? ”. Early in “A Hidden Life, ” theres a telling conversation between Franz and a man who paints murals of Christ on church ceilings — happy paintings of Jesus surrounded by his disciples, so that parishioners might have something nice to see when they lean back and look up at the heavens. The painter laments the cowardice that has kept him from painting Jesus suffering on the cross. “How can I know what I havent lived? ” he asks Franz. “Someday Ill have the courage to venture. Someday Ill show them a true Christ. ” For Malick, his someday has finally arrived. For the rest of us, this show of faith hasnt come a moment too soon. First Hit: I was, and even a day later, confused by this story and film.
We're really introduced to Cristi (Vlad Ivanov) and Gilda (Catrinel Marlon) when Gilda walks up to Cristi and asks to speak with him in his apartment. Cristi whispers into her ear that he apartment is bugged, so she kisses him and tells him she'll play the part of a hooker, and they can whisper her request, which is to help her by getting a criminal, Zsolt, out of prison.
In an early scene, Cristi is on a ferry heading to an island where the ancient people use to communicate by whistling. Cristi is part of a plot working with other criminals to free Zsolt and to do this he has to learn the whistling language.
The language breaks vowels and consonants into seven whistling sounds. This lesson in this language was the most exciting part of the film. I was fascinated with Cristi learning how to whistle and wanted to practice, along with him, right in the theater.
As the film develops, some parts led me to believe that the story in the movie was pre-planned, and I missed something as the film progressed. At other times, I felt as though Cristi and Gilda were planning the ending along the way because they'd fallen for each other.
As an undercover detective, Cristi works for an unnamed woman place by Rodica Lazar, who is trying to play both ends of this story.
The result is a film that has the appearance of a storyline running at two different levels, but in the end, the person sitting next to me asked if he missed something about how the ending worked out, I said "I don't know, and I still don't.
Ivanov was quietly compelling as the detective who was also on the take. Marlon was excellent as the woman who seemed totally in control of story behind the plot. Lazar was strong as the head of the investigation and also susceptible to corruption. Corneliu Porumboiu wrote and directed this quizzical story that left me hanging.
Overall: I either missed a critical section of this Romanian film or the story was attempting to be too elusive.

La Gomera a.k.a. "The Whistlers" is a fun Romanian neo-noir borrowing suspense tropes from James Cain, Robert Siodmak and Jules Dassin. The premise is a cop (no unreliable voice overs here) who had to learn the idiom of the whistling language for communicating with people living in interstitial spaces inside and outside of the law. Offbeat, at times hilarious in a deadpan way and rife with truly beautiful mise en scène, the film is a deconstructed tribute to this specific and particular film genre but operates outside of it. All the characters are vividly drawn, the supporting ones carry out the one-dimensionality of their roles with a certain lived-in freshness. The use of music was also very tasteful and deliberately operatic as counterpoint to the life-and-death situations, quirkily told. Corneliu Porumboiu seems to be having fun directing this story. it shows and I for one was swept by the story and storytelling.

This aggression, unknowingly committed against a man so dangerous that he used to be known as “Baba Yaga, ” forced John back into the network of contract killers hed once left behind. And ever since the shadowy crime lords of the High Table sniffed blood, they havent lost the scent or minded their own business. At the end of “John Wick: Chapter 2, ” our laconic hero committed a big no-no by shooting a pest on the consecrated grounds of the Continental Hotel, but desperate times call for desperate measures, and every New Yorker knows what its like when the world gets a bit too close for comfort. Giddy, exhausting, and breathtakingly violent, “La Gomera” begins a few seconds after the previous installment left off, with the excommunicated assassin trying to make the most of the hour-long headstart hes been given to hide before the 14 million bounty on his head is triggered and the entire criminal underworld comes after him. Of course, anyone whos seen the previous films in this unexpected franchise knows that its criminal underworld is more of an overworld, and that almost every featured extra? —? from street vendors and waiters to dog-walkers and homeless people? —? is a heat-packing hired gun who uses their role in the capitalist system as a disguise for their deeper allegiance to a veiled society that operates on an ancient market of codes and blood oaths. Now that Mr. Wick is square in the middle of all of those crosshairs, its become comically impossible for the deathless widower to find the solace he seeks. Hes a target, and it seems like the entire world has its finger on the trigger; he used to be anonymous, but now hes a celebrity. In its most enjoyably demented moments, “Parabellum” is nothing short of a non-stop metaphor for being famous. Less artful but more concussive than its immediate predecessor, this latest outing finds Mr. Wick being clocked by strangers every time he enters a room, stalked by his biggest fans, and so desperate for someone who will treat him like an actual human being that he travels all the way to the Sahara Desert to find them. Everyone in the world knows him by name, New York City is the only place on Earth he can hide in plain sight, and the perks of his job dont seem to compare with the harassment that comes with them. As Wick stumbles through the wet neon streets of Times Square—returning us to a surprisingly involved film world that flows like “The Raid” and looks like a hyper-saturated Instagram feed? —? its hard not to think of Reeves recent experience on a malfunctioning airplane, and how even that death-defying ordeal was turned into a viral moment (to the actors mild chagrin. Reeves once said that Wick was 40% him, but that number seems to have crept up a bit this time around. No movie has ever expressed the fight for anonymity with such viscerally literal force. True to the serialized nature of its title, “La Gomera” starts in media res and ends on a cliffhanger. For an 131-minute film that devotes roughly 110 minutes of its runtime to people shooting each other in the head at close range, it would be almost impossible to follow for someone who isnt up to speed. Still, the gist of the plot is pretty simple: John Wick kills a lot of people. Like, a lot of people. By the end of “Parabellum, ” hes basically the leading cause of death in henchmen between the ages of 25 and 50. More of a one-man massacre than ever before (but just raggedy enough to keep things “real”) Mr. Wick fights in a punishingly brutal style that builds on what director Chad Stahelski invented for the character in the previous films. This is a character who appears to know every single language under the sun, but violence is the most expressive part of his vocabulary (Reeves speaks maybe 100 words in the entire movie. Chinese wushu, Japanese judo, Southeast Asian silat, American Glock… Wick is fluent in them all. But while Stahelski and his team have obviously put a great deal of thought into every frame of fisticuffs, “Parabellum” is so relentless that it often devolves into a numbing flurry of shoulder flips and headshots. If “Chapter 2” bordered on high art for how cleverly it weaved tactical shootouts into public locations (and made every fight operate like an organic bit of world-building) “Chapter 3” is more out in the open. A sneaky little skirmish in Grand Central Station doesnt live up to Stahelskis creative potential, even if its amazing they pulled off the scene at all. Elsewhere, a motorcycle chase along an empty Manhattan bridge is too rushed and blurry to deliver the “Fury Road” ferocity it teases, and the climactic brawl? —? which makes great use of some familiar faces, and hinges on a funny dynamic of mutual respect—is overwhelmed by a set that looks like a high-end watch commercial, and feels like a watered-down retread of the house of mirrors sequence from the end of the previous movie. Driven by a profound respect for the expressive power of beating someone to death, and empowered by their 54-year-old stars remarkable skill and commitment, Stahelski and the other poets of percussive carnage that work at his 87Eleven Productions are still (a severed) head and shoulders above the rest of Hollywoods stunt community. But they can do more with this character, even if it means slowing things down and widening them out. To that end, its telling that the most exciting brawl in “Parabellum” (with the possible exception of a knife fight in a Chinatown antiques store) maintains a more expansive vision, as Mr. Wick fights alongside Halle Berry and some four-legged sidekicks. Traveling to Casablanca for reasons that are never adequately explained, Mr. Wick meets up with an assassin named Sofia who owns a pair of well-trained Malinois dogs; like every other supporting character in this movie, theres mixed blood between them, and she owes him something for some reason. There are coins and seals and lots of jibber jabber about High Table manners and then “Game of Thrones” star Jerome Flynn shows up as a Bronn-like business type whos a bit too greedy for his own good (its hard to tell what accent Flynn is doing here, but hes most definitely doing it. When the bullets fly, Sofias very La Gomera lend a valuable assist, and Stahelski has to open things up in order to frame the dogs as they chew on fresh corpses. The sequence is very “John Wick” and horribly terrific in a hand-over-your-mouth kind of way; it does more than any of the tossed-off business with the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburn) or the Continental Hotel owner (Ian McShane) to whet our appetites for another adventure. Anjelica Huston is also somewhat wasted as the matriarch of a Harlem ballet academy with ties to Wicks past, but her scenes are so immaculately shot that youre willing to let it slide. In a film that plays fast and loose with NYC geography, all is forgiven by turning 175th streets United Palace into the “Tarkovsky Theater, ” where people are trained to be killers in between performances of “Swan Lake. ” The films world-building works best in small doses. A meeting in the middle of the desert is a total dead end, whereas all sorts of fun details can be inferred from Stahelskis frequent cutaways to the High Table nerve center, where dozens of tattooed and lip-glossed workers monitor Wicks bounty with an old-fashioned switchboard (imagine a SuicideGirls reboot of “Mad Men” and youll have the right idea. Non-binary “Billions” star Asia Kate Dillon plays a stiff and slinky High Table adjudicator whos covered in Thierry Mugler coture; part referee and part femme fatale, their performance speaks to an underworld thats sustained by a mutual respect for all people so long as they dont shoot the wrong target. While this franchise is starting to feel a bit long in the tooth, such details suggest that screenwriter Derek Kolstad (here sharing credit with three other scribes) can still mine this world for plenty of new life, so long as future installments find a way to deepen the John Wick mythos instead of just stretching it out. With the significant exception of “Mission: Impossible, ” this is easily the best action franchise Hollywood has going these days, and it would be great for it to keep going with renewed focus. The fact that Keanu Reeves is nearing 60 wont matter to his fans. For one thing, the man is seemingly ageless. For another, retirement no longer seems like a realistic option for a guy who still gets recognized everywhere he goes. It doesnt matter if youre a Hollywood star or a 14 million bounty—fame can be a difficult thing to shake. Its a work-or-die world, and being forgotten is neither on the table nor under it.
